The principal aim of entire humanity is
peace. The boundaries of nations are drawn to achieve the world peace. The
religions and sects have been established with the core idea of achieving peace
in the world. Even the wars have been fought with the ideas of establishing world
peace. The efforts for world peace have been going on since the ages but the humanity
has also witnessed lots and lots of bloodshed in the name of world peace. The
world has been gifted to all for peace of every creature and all have equal
rights to live and all owe the responsibilities to let others live.

Human history still tells us that the
wars are unstoppable. During peace time also constant battles between good and
bad are going on within the society. There is always one news or other about
mass murders, terror attacks, and killing of innocent people across the world.
Many countries and the super powers too have not been left untouched by such
heinous crimes against the humanity. History also tells us that many big and
small countries on the earth too became the part of instigators of the war or
they directly launch wars on the brother nations to achieve selfish political
or economical goals. With the
development of weapons of mass destruction like chemical arsenals and nuclear
bombs, the chances of peace and the very existence of the humanity is endangered
as never before. The US and Russia have the largest stockpile of nuclear
weapons, each having respectively 7,000 and 6,800 nuclear bombs and other countries,
like France has 300, China 260, UK 215, Pakistan 130, India 120 and Israel 80 nuclear
bombs as per some media news. The humanity has already witnessed the catastrophe
of the two nuclear bombs dropped over the city of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in
Japan in 1945. These attacks had razed and burnt more than 70 percent of the buildings,
schools, and hospitals, killed millions of people, maimed thousands and the
human suffering lasted for many generations. The unstoppable devastation was grievous
to such an extent that the effects are still being felt.

However, the world is yet to take
lessons from the history. Is humanity out of danger from the massive
devastation of the wars now? Could it
establish the peace in the world? Certainly not! The world has witnessed many
small and big wars thereafter. In the recent past, constant rattling is heard
from the North Korea and US threatening each other to destroy completely by
using nuclear weapons. China- Pakistan combine and India are always grumbling
at each other. Other nations are also under the serious threats while some rogue
nations are grave threats to humanity. The constant threat of the risk of use
of nuclear weapons by the some countries and even nuclear weapons falling in
the hands of terrorist organizations is looming large and poses a greater risk than
ever. If another nuclear war takes place, it is possible that the war may affect
the entire world, wiping out many nations from the globe and turning them into
graveyards. Who will live then to witness the peace? Not at least the fighting
countries and their neighbors! And will it be a peace?

Under the shadow of a nuclear war, a
new ray of peace has emerged in the form of ‘ICAN’ to save the humanity from
total gloom. It is heartening to know that a group called ICAN-‘the
International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons’ has been awarded this year’s
Noble Peace Prize. The group is engaged in urging governments of the world to
wake up to the danger of catastrophic humanitarian consequences of the use of nuclear
weapons and act together to destroy the nuclear weapon arsenals. ICAN, a ten
year old Geneva Switzerland based, non-profit organization acts as a global umbrella
body for the group to end the nuclear weapons. In July, this year, ICAN’s efforts saw 122
nations supporting the UN Treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons. The
treaty bans development, testing, production, manufacturing, possessing and
stockpiling of nuclear weapons. The group has been awarded the Noble Peace
Prize for the ground breaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of
nuclear weapons.

Under the shadow of a nuclear war, a new
ray of peace, the ICAN needs to be supported by one and all, by all the small and
the big countries. The people, the celebrities, industrialists and common
people need to come together and support the peace proposals of ICAN. It is also
the greater responsibility of the super powers like US and Russia and other
leading nations having nuclear arsenals to open their eyes to the realities of
the consequences of use of nuclear weapons and make this world nuclear weapon
free. India believes in ‘Vasudhev Kutumbakam’, the world is a family and the
need of the peace for the family is greater than ever before under the threat
of nuclear weapons.
'Om Shanti’
Let there be peace everywhere.
