US H-1B Visa Restrictions and Opportunities for Indian IT Companies

Recently a legislation has been  introduced in the US House of Representatives mandating that the minimum salary of H-1B visa holders be doubled to $130,000. It will also prevent high skill jobs from going to non-US citizens. It is being deliberated in India that the move will pose a big blow  to the Indian IT sector if this legislation is passed. As a consequence,  equity shares of Indian IT companies have already tanked heavily after this news.

If we look back to the past, many  talented Indians started pouring in the US early from nineteen seventees. These Indians have broken boundaries in innovations and rose to high positions in US through their hard work. Today, the rise of Indians and Indian-Americans in the US tech world appears to be at its peak with as many as 15% of startups in Silicon Valley being founded by Indians. The most prominent persons among the Indian & Indian Americans  are; Sundar Pichai, Chief Executive officer of Google, Satya Nadella heading Microsoft, Indra Nooyi, Chairperson and Chief Executive of PepsiCo and Ajaypal Singh Banga and Chief Executive of MasterCard. Today, they are the  most influential Indian business leaders in the word. There are other prominent names like Rashmi Sinha,  co-founder of SlideShare,  Vinod Khosla, co-founder of Sun Microsystems, Amit Singhal, Senior VP Google, Shantanu Nareayen, President and CEO of Adobe, Padmasree Warrior, CTO, Cisco, Sabeer Bhatia of Hotmail and many more  who have made it a big in Silicon Valley. It is said that the main reason for their success is the presence of strong support system in US and a strong bond of loyalty which provide them opportunities to go beyond stereotyped jobs and excel in their chosen fields.

Today, Indian Americans are the third largest Asian American ethnic group. It is said that India-based companies are responsible for creating 91,000 jobs and $15 billion in investments across the United States, according to a new report released by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). America too needs India more than India needs it in today's globalized world where walls can be demolished easily but building is too tough due to intricate international socio-political & business inter dependencies. However, living with the reality, the threat posed by American legislation also offers greater opportunities to country like India with its  sustainable growth rate of more than 7%. Therefore, can we view the new legislation introduced in the US House of Representatives as a blessing in disguise for Indian IT industries & Indian talents?

We all know that the US had imposed sanctions on India  after Pokhran II nuclear test in May 1998 banning export to around 200 Indian companies. As a consequence, India has developed it's own, largely indigenous nuclear programme and has achieved self sufficiency in many areas of nuclear technology. India could also become a first Asian nation to reach Mars orbit, through its indigenously developed "Mangalyan" spacecraft and has become the first nation in the world to do so in its first attempt, that too at a much lower cost.  The Mangalyan project cost was  just 4.5 billion rupees, or about $74 million compared to  NASA's mission cost of around $672 million. The US legislation on H1B visa restrictions too offers challenges and opportunities to Indian technology giants to create their own Silicon Valleys within India. The  cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Indore, Nagpur,  Noida/ Greater Noida, Gurgaon, New Delhi etc. are  already shining on the Indian IT map and many other two tier cities too offer excellent opportunities for building new IT hubs. Why we can't have our own Googles, Microsofts, IBMs, Dells &  Facebooks?  Indian IT giants like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL, Tech Mahindras etc. should accept these challenges to achieve this ambitious targets. The Modi government's present  policies like  "Make in India", " Start Up India", Digital India" and "Skill India'  are already providing much needed impetus to local manufacturing and innovations in technology. Therefore, India can easily  encash the opportunities thrown open by US restrictions and emerge as one of the biggest technology hub in Asea.  With this aim, we can also expect a reverse flight of the  talented Indians, back to India who can  realize their bigger dreams sitting in the lap of their motherland. Indians do have wisdom, competencies, will and spirit of "we can do it" if they decide. Snapdeal, Olacabs, Bigbasket, Delhivery, OYORooms, Zomato Swiggy, Practo, Paytm, Quikr, Helpchat, PepperTap, CarDekho etc. are some of the top rankings start ups in India which amply prove the point.

India today also offers  advantages of cheap technical manpower and a business friendly environment with fastest growing infrastructural facilities. The Tatas, Birla,  Mutthys, Premjis, Nadars and even the likes of Ambanis,  Adanis, Mittals, Naiks revisit their vision documents and come up with concrete plans to promote building Indian IT  giants like Google, Microsoft, Apple, IBM, Dell, HP,  Amazon, Intel etc. or even better. If they rise to the occasion & come forward with their project plans, they will be welcomed with open arms by the people of India as well as  the government of India .

Wake up India! Yes! the threat can be turned up into greater opportunitities.
