Vikram Samvat which is officially the Hindu New Year. It is celebrated in
different way in different Hindu communities, like Maharashtrians celebrate it
as Gudi Padwa, by Sindhis as Cheti Chand, Kashmiris as Navreh and Ugadi in the
state of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
The Hindu New Year falls on the first day after the new moon
day in the first month of the lunar calendar, Chaitra. The New Year is
celebrated widely in North India and East India and the religious rituals are
observed in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, New Delhi, Jammu and
Kashmir, Bihar, Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkand, Himachal Pradesh, etc. Vikram
Samvat Nav Varsh is celebrated as Bikram Sambat (Hindu New Year) in
Nepal also.
According
to Bramha Purana, Lord Brahma created the universe on this day and it is
considered the most auspicious day. Gudi means Brahma’s flag and Padwa means
the first day after new moon day, Amavashya. Gudi is worshipped 5-10 minutes
after the sunrise which is supposed to bring the new universal consciousness
and peace among the worshipers.
The
Hindu Calender is named after King Vikramaditya of Ujjain. The day is marked as
a victory day of King Vikramaditya over Sakas who invaded Ujjain. The Hindu calendar
is an amalgam of Solar and Lunar reckonings and is conceived as Luni-Solar calendar
as followed by Hindus.
Wish
you a very Happy New Year once again.
