Yoga and Meditation for Physical, Mental and Spiritual Wellness

Normal level of stress is essential to move forward in the life. It motivates a person to achieve certain goals and objectives. However excessive stress is counterproductive and seriously affects the job, family life as well as health. The major causes of stress is fear of losing someone or something in life, failures in life, uncertainties, our perception and attitude towards others and self, our response to a given situation and our unrealistic expectation etc. Excessive mental stress is the main cause of many diseases in the today’s modern world and quite a big expenditure is incurred in regular treatment of various physical and mental disorders.

Everybody has a goal in life and that goal is expected to give peace and happiness to a person. How can we achieve the goal in life? How can we achieve the peace and happiness in life? The ancient Indian knowledge of Yoga and Mediation is the answer to the modern humanity to achieve true peace and happiness. By regular practice of yoga and meditation, the goals become achievable and true peace and happiness is established. It not only benefits the person practicing these methods but benefits the family and society too. By practicing the yoga and meditation, the awareness about the self and other increases, the life becomes meaningful and the person is uplifted to a new spiritual realm where he/she starts seeing the ‘self’ in others. He/she feels oneness with the universe and becomes more caring about the self and others.

Yoga helps in achieving a healthy body and overall wellness. The need is to adopt Yoga and Meditation for Physical, Mental and Spiritual Wellness. The word ‘Yoga’ means union. The union is of the body and mind. As per Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra,Yoga is defined asयोग: चित्त-वृत्ति निरोध(yogaḥ citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ), means yoga is control of mind and nature. Yoga is union of individual consciousness, which is the soul with the universal consciousness. Yoga is beyond the physical exercises like asanas (yoga postures), stretching and twisting of body and breathing which are just basic ingredients for a healthy body at physical level. Yoga leads to unfolding of infinite hidden potential of the human mind and soul and uplifting of the consciousness to a higher spiritual level.

Meditation is basically concentration of mind. Normally the mind is constantly jumping from one thought to other. Even in sleep state also, the subconscious mind is very active and busy in dreaming and creating its own world. Concentration of mind is bringing it back to a certain point or focusing it on a certain object. However, meditation is much more than concentration. It is the state of cessation of thought process and rising to the level of self awareness. Outward manifestation of constant joy, happiness and calmness in the person’s life are the signs or prolonged meditational practice.

Combining the three; Yoga, Meditation and Spirituality leads to a healthy body, healthy mind and elevated state of consciousness. As a result, the life becomes more peaceful and blissful and achieves ability to remain so in all circumstances and every situation.

By practicing the Yoga and Meditation regularly, a person reaps large benefits. It enriches the body, mind and soul. The person finds ever new energy. It distresses the body and mind. The body and mind, both are totally calmed. As result of regular practice, it has been established through scientific experiments that our mental waves starts working at a much lower frequency within the range of 4-10 Hertz. Our body is able to get adequate sleep and rest. Our mental abilities increase. It lowers our blood pressure, increase our immunity level, improves our digestive system and we achieve a state of ever joyfulness. Our family life improves and our relationship works better. Our soul energy becomes stronger and our awareness to see the self in everyone and every creature manifests. Our personality finds a total change and our ability to live with love and peace with everybody becomes stronger. We feel universal brotherhood and our belief system accepts the world as a family. We achieve the true realization of the idea of ‘वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम-Vasudhev Kutumbakam’-the world is a family.
